Director of Development and Marketing

Basic Function

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Development plans, implements, and directs all fund raising activities including grant procurement, events, event sponsorships, major donor cultivation and marketing activities.


The Director of Development is responsible for the supervision of the Special Events and Development Manager.

Representative Duties


Plans, coordinates, researches and supervises work for all foundation letters of inquiry, grant applications to local, regional and national Foundations and appropriate governmental entities.  Prepares budgets for grants in consultation with the Executive Director. Works with the Director of Finance in implementing budgets for approved grants.  Maintains grant reporting calendar for approved grants and submits written narrative and budget reports in accordance with the grant requirements.  Maintains regular appropriate contact with grant-making foundations to keep them apprised of our programs, services and prospective mutual areas of interest.

Reviews, researches, prepares and assembles Requests for Proposal (RFP) in response to governmental requests such as Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), Nutrition Contracts, and other similar proposals.  Responsible for supervising the timely project completion, budget compliance, bid preparation and required governmental reporting for these projects.

Manages the Mizell Stars Club Annual Giving Program, with appointed Board Representative and development staff.  Develops prospect identification, donor acquisition, cultivation, retention, and acknowledgement protocols.

Manages Business Partnership Program; works with Special Events and Development Manager to develop business prospect list; meets with prospective Business Partners and sells program; maintains quality and satisfaction with program.

Acts as primary staff lead for annual Stars Among Us Event including preparing and managing budgets, developing and implementing a sponsorship development plan, working with event designer(s) and catering vendors.  With development staff, schedules and conducts regular meetings with the event committee.  Works with Mizell staff and development staff and event committee volunteers in coordinating and procuring items for silent auction. Insures adequate volunteers for the event.

Responsible for developing, writing and implementing at least two written appeals for contributions for general operating support.  Holiday, Spring, with a possible Summer Appeal.

With Development Staff, promotes and sells exhibitor booths at Senior Living Expos; sells display advertising in Expo programs and in Quarterly Senior Report; Solicits corporate sponsors for Expo and other special events as required.  Develops marketing and advertising plan to promote event.

Develops and implements additional fundraising and friendraising events with donors, business partners, Stars Club Members and for the general public.  Reviews and recommends event site contracts, coordinates event publicity and ticket sales.  Maintains annual events such as Martini’s on the Mountain and coordinates with Modernism Week for ticket sales and event description as well as sponsorship for the event.

Works with the Mizell Board of Directors in supporting their efforts for fund development with options including personal donations, cultivating their personal and professional contacts for contributions and support, and attending Mizell and community events as Mizell representatives.

Staff liaison to the Endowment Board.  Schedules meetings, takes and prepares minutes, maintains investment reports from The Community Foundation, and is primary contact with The Community Foundation.  Works with Director of Finance in providing necessary financial reports.  Works to secure contributions to the Endowment Fund primarily through the Tree of Life and Charitable Gift Annuities.

Reviews new fund raising concepts and submits written recommendations.

Develops and maintains planned giving program.

Attends community events, gala’s, mixers, awards events, community and neighborhood associations, and social events in order to maintain a Mizell presence in the community, meet with and develop relations with current and prospective donors, and promote Mizell Senior Center.


Responsible for maintaining the Mizell website and supervises appropriate Mizell staff for day-to-day updating.  Responsible for maintaining the Mizell Facebook Page and supervises appropriate Mizell staff for regular updating and promotion of events, activities and programs.  Responsible for maintaining and utilizing the Mizell Twitter account for distribution of weekly newsletter and notices of events or activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of concepts, objectives and requirements related to complex foundation and governmental grant and RFP submissions; Knowledge and understanding of donor prospecting, cultivation, and retention; Ability to effectively communicate in writing and public speaking  for the purpose of grant writing, general appeal letters, and speaking on behalf of Mizell Senior Center or communicating with donors and prospective donors; Knowledge of basic website development and maintenance, Facebook, Twitter and other on-line marketing and development.  Computer skills including the Microsoft Office suite of programs, e-mail, Constant Contact, Donor Perfect, and other computer software and hardware.  Ability to evaluate, develop and communicate policies, and procedures; works independently with little direction; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others; meets schedules and time lines.
