OneFuture Coachella Valley, formerly Coachella Valley Workforce Excellence, Inc., under the umbrella of the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership, has formed a new corporation and nonprofit.
OneFuture Coachella Valley unifies regional efforts to increase educational attainment and career preparedness among low income students to assure healthy and economically thriving youth, families and communities and, simultaneously, a high quality workforce and strong regional economy.
Convening a cross-section of leadership from all levels of education with employers and community agencies, the initiative provides career-themed linked learning pathways at the K-12 level, work-based learning for middle school through college undergrads, and scholarships and financial aid assistance to prepare all students for college, career and life.
At the heart of the effort, the Coachella Valley Regional Plan for College and Career Success drives progress on educational attainment and career success goals including: 30% of high school students in career academies, 85% of seniors completing the federal application for student aid; 10% increase in high school graduation, and 10% increase in Cal-Grant award uptakes and the development of an endowment to award $1 million annually in scholarships
This work is critically important because increasing educational attainment and career readiness is central to reducing poverty, decreasing unemployment, increasing wages for our most disadvantaged students and their families and building a thriving regional economy.
OneFuture Coachella Valley directly serves 3,000 students per year and supports regional college and career programs that touch 7,000 students across the K-12 pipeline, including 1575 scholarship recipients awarded more than $10 million of funding since 2009.
The Development Director is charged with implementing a recently adopted fund development plan and establishing and managing a comprehensive fund development program. The fundraising plan outlines preferred priorities among foundation and institutional grants, event-based solicitation, individual and major donor activities, and use of mail and social media for development purposes.
This position will oversee the development and implementation of donor acquisition strategies as well as ensure long-term donor engagement through effective relationship management. The Director of Development manages the fundraising activities of the CEO and board members to enhance and support the overall mission of the organization and assure that ample unrestricted and program funds are generated. The position is responsible for spearheading grant proposals, assuring program staff are creating effective grant proposals and coordinating with relevant staff to provide grant reports.
The ideal candidate is an effective fundraiser who thrives on the responsibility of driving an organization to successfully meet its fundraising targets. Strong candidates will have a proven track record in securing major gifts, identifying and acquiring new donors, a willingness to develop and leverage the Board as well as a personal passion for education and career and economic opportunity for low-income students. This position offers a unique opportunity to cultivate a fund development culture within an organization with a compelling mission, but little experience with non-grant fundraising.
This newly formed position is an excellent opportunity for someone who believes strongly in the power of education as an integral part of economic development and who brings a strong commitment to the College and Career Readiness model being carried out by OneFuture Coachella Valley and its partners in the region.
Because goals and desired results can quickly change, the position requires regularly meeting and pro-actively establishing relationships with new groups and individuals. The ability to understand, react, and motivate others to adapt to the changing environment is a critical key to success. The job will require some travel, much of which will be regional in nature. Working on occasional evenings and weekends will occur.
- Provide strategic direction for the organization’s overall fundraising goals and implementation plans, including management of all campaigns and activities related to Annual and Planned Giving support. Collaborate with Director of Finance and Administration and CEO to develop annual revenue targets and all monthly contributed revenue generation reporting.
- Develop a fundraising culture that will lead to a successful capital campaign to fund ongoing scholarship awards at a minimum of $1 million annually.
- Research and analyze individual donors and prospects in order to develop long-term goals and objectives for each contribution category.
- Maintain timely and consistent contact with potential individual and institutional donors in order to establish, sustain and enhance positive relationships leading to an initial gift and repeated gifts.
- Lead selection and development of effective fundraising/donor management system/software
- Work with the Board of Directors to maximize their own giving potential, and develop targeted strategies to engage their relationships with others as potential new donors.
- Develop clear lines of communication with all staff and volunteers.
- Build a fund development culture throughout the organization.
- Develop and oversee a timely and relevant gift acknowledgement and donor recognition program.
- Monitor all revenue and expenses related to all fundraising activities, including Annual and Planned Giving programs.
- Represent the organization to the community and through professional functions as appropriate.
- Lead grant writing and reporting efforts; coordinate assignment of grant writing, budget development and reporting activities to relevant staff.
- Assume related tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the CEO.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must have the needed knowledge and skill to successfully influence and persuade others by understanding how their individual needs and motivations link to the organization’s goals.
The Development Director must have significant and well-demonstrated experience leading teams toward reaching aspirational fund development goals, overcoming challenges, and serving as an agent for transformation. She/he must have a minimum of five (5) years of fund development experience and a proven record in at least the following:
- Designing and implementing all annual fundraising efforts, fund development strategies and related campaigns, including a capital campaign to fund ongoing scholarship awards at a minimum of $1 million annually.
- A proven track record of personally soliciting and securing gifts of $25,000 or more.
- Developing relationships with prospects that translate into major gifts and sustained giving
- Building strong working relationships with internal and external partners, and meaningfully interacting with diverse populations including staff, students, civic and business leaders, community partners, and funders
- Writing and speaking with excellence and relevance with different constituencies (subordinates, managers, peers, donors and Board members)
- Exceptional work ethic and track record of personal initiative and achievement
- Managing multiple tasks and urgent priorities while also maintaining peace and calm with internal and external partners
- Ability to read reports, gather and analyze data and compile information for written reports
- Familiarity with principles and practices of effective fund development strategies
The successful candidate must also have:
- Earned at least a Bachelor’s degree, with a preference for a Master’s degree with a minimum three years of experience in development work
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
- Passed appropriate clearances (criminal record and child abuse)
Salary range: $90,000 - $100,000. Competitive benefits
