Director of Development (Administrator II) /Palm Desert

Employment Status: Full-time, "exempt" position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, occasional early morning, evening and weekend hours may be required. As needed, travel may be required to participate in program events/activities.

Work Location: This position will work from the Palm Desert Campus.  

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Typical Activities

The Director of Development (DOD) is the primary development professional assigned to fundraise for the Palm Desert Campus (PDC).  Under the direct leadership of the Associate Vice President, University Development, the DOD will work with University Development leadership and the PDC Dean to implement a fundraising plan that generates philanthropic support to benefit the PDC.  The DOD will focus on coordinating and maintaining a successful comprehensive fund-raising program that includes planning and implementing strategies for identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gift prospects, with the goal of annual increases in both the number and amount of gifts received. The DOD is responsible for maintaining an active portfolio of current and prospective donors, which requires active involvement in the ongoing identification, cultivation, and solicitation of alumni, corporations, foundations, parents and friends to maximize philanthropic support for a variety of programs and priorities within the PDC.
The DOD will serve as a central clearinghouse for gift transmittal forms and gift reporting for the PDC.  This position requires a strong commitment to philanthropy, effective communication and writing skills, and a proficient knowledge of all related fundraising, tax, and legal areas.   

  • The DOD will work with the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Development and the Dean as well as advancement colleagues to envision college and campus-wide development goals, initiatives, events, campaigns and protocols.
  • Work with the alumni & annual giving operation, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations and other staff to ensure that the service and informational needs of the PDC and general university supporters are addressed in a seamless and immediate manner.
  • Work with the division's advancement services office as well as prospect management and research office to consistently ensure the freshness, correctness, and security of the advancement database, along with prospect, donor and alumni records.
  • The DOD will work with the AVP, and the Dean to develop a successful development program and quantified plan that identifies the resource needs of the PDC.  Under the leadership of the AVP for Development, the DOD will be responsible for the implementation of the plan and activities designed to meet approved development goals.
  • Coordinate fund-raising efforts within the context of the University's development program, including alumni and parents through major gift and annual fund campaigns.
  • Provide active leadership in the identification, solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship of major donors and donor prospects, to include individuals, business entities, corporations, and foundations for the support of PDC's programs.
  • Formulate and execute short-term and long-term strategic plans to include specific and measurable targets regarding definite fund-raising goals, prospect management, personal contacts, stewardship activities and solicitations.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Strategic Communications to produce development communications collateral that promotes PDC programs through publications, fund-raising events, stewardship, and donor recognition activities to both on-campus and off-campus constituents to improve awareness and expanded support.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the PDC, the division of university advancement, and the university to maintain a strong stewardship strategy for portfolio donors and to ensure fund-raising activities are coordinated with the university's efforts.
  • Provides supervision to the assigned PDC development associate.
  • Personally visit with prospective donors, create and manage appropriate relationships and stewardship for donors with specific faculty, staff, students and alumni.
  • Work closely with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations in the submission of grant applications, case statements and appropriate major gift proposals.
  • Deliver timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors, press releases, and communication materials.
  • Ensure best practices in donor stewardship activities at PDC.  This includes appropriate individual and organizational donor recognition and stewardship as well as the coordination and oversight of all scholarship endowments and awards.
  • Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of various development strategies and activities and recommend refinements and new advancement ventures as needed. 
  • Represent the PDC and the university in the community by attending events, participating in local organizations and serving on community based boards. 
  • Coordinate annual PDC golf tournament and silent auction at Stone Eagle Golf Club to raise money for PDC
  • Oversee and plan celebratory events 
  • Plan and conduct sponsorship programs and activities designed to increase the visibility of the college and its sponsorship initiatives. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and effectively communicate university and campus goals and priorities in support of development. 
  • The DOD is part of an effective University Advancement team and will participate in divisional strategic planning, goal setting, event planning, project status sessions and will maintain the highest standards of campus development procedures and protocols utilizing the various forms, report formats, databases, and clearance procedures.  Work with the Dean to ensure that all development-oriented pieces, communications and events adhere to the university-wide and division graphic and identity standards.
  • Integrate PDC development efforts with the central Advancement staff and the various services in place.  Work with the division's advancement services, gift processing to ensure accurate gift processing and receipting; file contact reports with central advancement.
  • In addition to providing primary focus on the development objectives and needs of the PDC, the DOD will assist with general donor cultivation, asks and stewardship as part of the University development team that attracts additional campus support important to all colleges, schools and programs.
  • Represent the PDC, the division and the university in the community by attending events, participating in local organizations and serving on community based boards.  
Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university required, preferably in Business, Marketing, or Communication.
  • Valid driver's license and private automobile with required insurance.
  • Three years of progressively responsible and successful major gifts, sales or fund-raising experience, including program planning and personal solicitation.
  • Proven success in goal achievement for operating, capital, and endowment fund development, including a track record of closing six and seven figure gifts/sales; donor/client cultivation and asks.
  • This position requires a self-starter with strong written and oral communication skills, well-developed computer skills and the ability to work in a team oriented environment as well as manage and supervise support staff.
  • Excellent oral and written skills required relating well and communicating effectively with a variety of constituents, including high-profile leaders. 
  • Knowledge of the financial structure of donations, grants and contracts to include cash, gifts-in-kind, stocks, securities, planned gifts, endowments and real estate. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, on and off campus, serving in a leader role, and as a liaison and representative of the department, division, college and the university.  Must demonstrate accepted business and professional etiquette in all dealings with constituents and colleagues. 
  • Demonstrated ability and success in donor/client solicitation and cultivation and asks to individuals and corporations for support on a significant scale according to college needs and activities. 
  • Ability to assess and interpret the needs and wishes of prospective donors, and to translate these into effective action plans. 
  • Ability to gather data, analyze information, and prepare reports. 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when required due to donor, development, and cultivation meetings, events and activities.
  • Understands and reflects the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.
